Living in an English idyll

Logically, now is about the time I should be sitting down to compose my thoughts on a year living in England. Realistically, I find it hard to reflect on an entire year and translate those feelings into a single blog entry. For the first six months we lived a little like nomads, in three different temporary places, our shipment from Australia frustratingly still in boxes in an Oxford storage shed. But these past six months of being settled in our own space, has allowed for a proper sense of living in England. I feel better able to articulate the last few months, rather than a whole year.

You can recap on the anticipation of moving, here if you like.

As I type, over six months have passed since we moved into this Cotswold cottage next to a brook in what is often described as "the prettiest village in England". We are feeling more and more at home; our neighbours recognise us and chat to us if we pass them on a walk in the woodland. We've volunteered for the village charity car boot sale. And we are very excited to attend the next few Christmas social events organised by the social committee. I am particularly looking forward to Carols by candlelight in the village church.

As village residents we've seen three seasons, and all the delights that they each have to offer. We moved in at the very beginning of spring, when the daffodils were blooming en masse on roadsides and along the brook, seemingly welcoming us with their endlessly cheery disposition. Primrose carpeted the churchyard, vines unfurled. Wild ramson shoots scented the air, lambs bleated in nearby fields, ducklings appeared on the brook and bluebells in the woodland. I clipped whatever was in the garden to bring spring indoors whenever I could.

Summer swept in with warm breezes that swayed the branches in the towering trees around the cottage, windows were flung open to let in the grassy scent of summer and the rustling noise of the tree canopy. Farm traffic thundered through the village multiple times a day, a frenetic energy took hold of this beautiful agricultural region as farmers used every second of the long days to harvest & bale and plough & sow. Sunlight stretched long into the night and the birds anticipated dawn sometimes as early as 4am.

Autumn has gripped now. Misty mornings are frequent, smoking chimneys the tell-tale sign that fireplaces are being put back into use. And those lush green trees I gazed up at all summer long? Some days I silently curse them as another burst of wind leaves the doorstep inches deep in leaf litter. Again.

A couple of days ago I lit our first fire since moving in.

Our basket of woollen hats and gloves is back next to the front door for easy reach as we walk outside into crisp morning air. And there is a lovely comfort that comes with walking through the house at dusk drawing the curtains and switching on lamps.

We're still buying pieces for the house to completely make it a home, but I think i'll start sharing pockets of the house as we find items and style rooms. I had intended to photograph and share more of the interior of the cottage- an 18th Century building is interesting after all. In truth, it's been a slower process than I anticipated to find furniture we truly love. But with a few recent, much dreamed of finds, I hope to get some photographs taken before the autumn sunshine is dimmed by winter fog and it becomes too dark to take pictures indoors.

Poppies

Our move to England happens this month.

With such an important date looming you'd think I would be hastily packing, sifting through paperwork, or occupied by some other equally important task.

Instead I am spamming instagram with pictures of the poppies I bought last Friday.

My time management is woeful.

Links to love: December edition

A baked WREATH from Call Me Cupcake.

Floral WINESICLES for an adult summer treat.

So happy to see a SINCLAIR AND MOORE interview on the FLORET FARM BLOG. These are two flower-centric creatives that I love to follow online.

FLORET FLOWER FARM makes me want to live in Washington state and grow flowers. And of course A COUNTRY FARMHOUSE does too.

Current instagram crushes: HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE.

It's DAVID AUSTIN season. Woo hoo!

I think I could eat THIS in one sitting.

I love these little illuminated DUTCH HOUSES. If only I had a mantle to put them on.

Garland ideas: HERE, HERE, and HERE.

Finally, in light of the horrors of the last month, and the world being noisy with hate, fear and ignorance, I keep playing THIS scene in my mind. Yes, I still watch Grey's Anatomy. I am twelve seasons committed. Can't quit, won't quit.

And now, I am off to enjoy the best of stone-fruit season here in sunny Australia. How does that song go?
Moving to the country...

Jasmine: The Language of Flowers, part 3

September, when the smell of jasmine is carried on the warm evening air. My nose 'spotted' this flowering jasmine vine long before my eyes had a chance.

Sensuality // beauty // grace // elegance // friendliness.

The smell of jasmine is particularly strong at night. Its fragrance is said to be an aphrodisiac, and a relaxing antidepressant. Jasmine oil is therefore used extensively in aromatherapy. Burning the essential oil of jasmine in Eastern cultures is considered to promote love, wealth, and prophetic dreams.

"No perfume without jasmine."

Links to love: July edition

If you're on the mend from end-of-financial-year fever (or celebrations, like Master A  is), there might be some adequate tonic in some of these links for you. Brace yourself, this edition of links to love is loooong.

ICED FLOWERS, apt right now in the dead of winter.

And I definitely NEED one of these.

This might just be my DREAM HOME.

GARDENS GALORE.

Tips for growing ROSES.

TIMELESS  and beautiful.

CHELSEA IN BLOOM

What the search words 'moss' and 'vine' will return on PINTEREST.

Such inspiration grouped together at the AFAVOURITEVIGNETTEFROM7VIGNETTES hashtag.

Could KARA ROSENLUND please adopt me and teach me all that she knows?

I would plan a holiday just to visit THE WAREHOUSE AT WOODSIDE. If I could style vignettes half as well as this, I'd feel euphoric.

Cuteness OVERLOAD.

YES, just yes. Love wins.

Something I DREAM of doing.

If you like acoustic covers of mainstream music, BOYCE AVENUE is a sublime soundtrack for your cold winter days.

If ever there was an INSTAGRAM hashtag designed for moi? THIS is the tag!

And lastly, my very English family will appreciate THIS.

The tulip series

When they were tight and fresh, the colour of these tulips looked so promising, I had to buy them. Unfortunately that beautiful pink blush colour faded as the days went on. I have enjoyed their presence in my home none-the-less. Fading flowers also have a certain charm.

Day 1.

Day 3.

Day 5.

Tulips continue to grow even once they've been cut. It can be necessary to keep cutting the stems so they don't outgrow their vase (cut flowers should be re-cut every other day anyway), but just quietly, I love what I call the 'drunken tulip' look that happens when they start to tumble from the vase.

How stunning can yellow tulips en masse look? VERY stunning.

My favourite variety of tulips? LA BELLE EPOQUE.

See them this spring at TULIP TOP GARDEN IN HIDDEN VALLEY.

Can't bake a cake without breaking eggs

The weather outside is miserable. My cake baking hankerings are at fever pitch. But there is one particular recipe I am keen to try, and wouldn't you know it, I'm an ingredient short. I could don my rubber boots, a warm coat, and venture to the shops, but I'm a resident of Sydney, and everybody knows that Sydney-siders can't function in the rain. Why? I'm not sure. It's just an accepted truth. You will never encounter another major city coming to near-standstill just because a few drops of water fall from the sky.

As soon as the heavens begin cooperating with my food cravings, I'll be making this MILK AND CITRUS CAKE. Imen's blog FARMETTE is one of my absolute favourite food and lifestyle blogs. I cannot wait for her cook book to be available in Australia. It is sure to be filled with extraordinarily stunning food styling and photographs of the Irish countryside. In the meantime if you're hungry (pun) for more of this hearty, farm-kitchen style cookery and exquisite images, follow Imen's blog and INSTAGRAM feed.

I am also keen to try THIS just as soon as I can get my hands on some lavender free from nasty pesticides. Again, wishing I could time travel back to my OLD HOME to savour a backyard acreage of flowering rows of lavender.

And this heavenly looking LILAC PAVLOVA recipe will be attempted just as soon as the summer lilacs start to bloom. G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S!

In praise of simple pleasures

It might be the cold weather, the shorter days, or the inevitable mid-year slump, but we find ourselves indulging our desires more and more at the moment, and damn the calories consequences. Before I share what we are loving (and slathering in double cream) in our nest right now, let me just also note that we imposed a little dry period for the first few weeks of June. I am alcohol-free most of the time anyway, however Alex tumbled from the wagon when he had a beer with a seafood platter lunch. In his defence it was the long weekend, and the sun was shining. And we were next to the water, looking at pretty sail boats and a frolicking seal. But not all of our weaknesses come attached to excess calories. Mine are usually floral related. Or found in vintage and thrift shops.

I am taking full advantage of the early spring flowers that are available right now. I bought a bunch of poppies to give to my Mum on the long weekend. Then I snuck out to the camelia bush in my Nan's backyard to pick this pink beauty. It has resulted in a new appreciation for these wonderful and DIVERSE FLOWERS. If only they in turn appreciated being cut and put into a vase. Camelia is used almost exclusively for its leaves in floristry. The flowers have little commercial value as they die quickly.

We've been eating SCONES too. Quite a few scones actually. Two batches and counting. The food related indulgences have me most worried, because it's not limited to scones, jam and cream. There is also an increase in the amount of crusty white bread being eaten. Melting moments, FUDGE, chocolate brownies and copious amounts of french onion dip have also made appearances.

The up-swing of scones is the chance to indulge my current obsession with silver spoons. Jam spoons, teaspoons, mustard spoons. I want them all. My preoccupation with CUTLERY is unshakeable. I'm having a serious love affair with cutlery right now. HERE, HERE & HERE.

It is funny almost sad how excited I can get over a good INSTAGRAM hashtag these days. I think the lack of flower flinging in my day-to-day life recently has left a creative void that needs filling. I am attempting to self-teach better prop styling and photography. Instagram hashtag competitions are a wonderful prompt for this practice. I love the monthly #7VIGNETTES, and @ITS_MY_WEEK run a fantastic weekly competition with a new theme each Monday. But given my adoration of vintage cutlery, I participated in #THESPOONSERIES tag with much enthusiasm. My entries? HERE, HERE and HERE.

Links to love: June edition

This We Fell in Love FEATURED WEDDING is very lovely.

What can I say? THE CUTTING GARDEN.

THIS shop makes me want to up-sticks and move to Bath. Also, THIS does. And, AUSTEN does too, obviously.

Some garden envy happening HERE.

A link for the FUTURE. Where I will buy my old rose varieties for my dream garden.

I can't get enough of these CUTIES.

I'm pining for my very own KUMQUAT tree to cut branches from.

This is nothing short of exceptionally CUTE.

I know I say it every month, but how WONDERFUL to be a farmer florist.

Fellow flora enthusiasts rejoice, the beginning of winter means the sweetest smelling ERLICHEER is just around the corner.

Keep warm,

Native to Mexico, bouvardia means enthusiasm // zest for life.

Prettiest science experiment I ever conducted.

A never-ending list

I know, I know, I already gave you the somewhat definitive list of my favourite flowers HERE, but it turns out there were some notable absences. Like I said, it's a difficult list to contain.

Lilac

Hellebores

Freesia

They all deserve a loud and enthusiastic shout-out. It is a constantly evolving list as I learn about new flowers, handle new blooms, and continue to peruse on-line wedding flower inspiration. My current favourite sources? WE FELL IN LOVE and THE KNOT. *Swoooon* worthy, indeed!

Today I came home with a much needed bunch of sweetness in the form of hyacinth. Sydney has been experiencing biblical amounts of rain recently. And the perfect antidote to that is the heavenly scented, cheerily pretty, spring hyacinth. So that's one more to add to my list of favourite flowers.

World Hyacinth Day is celebrated on March 7th, when hyacinths are blooming in abundance in the northern hemisphere. According to the Victorians, hyacinth means: constancy, sportiness, impetuousness, and "I am sorry". They truly smell uplifting. Better than any perfume you could buy.

Bottoms up!

We are officially back in the "big smoke".
Our little (temporary) apartment has little more than a few white goods and a bed at the moment, but we are once again Sydney-siders.
I've been slow to dive back into the rush of city living, I dipped a proverbial toe in the waters first.

But, I'll admit to be being a little excited to experience some new aspects of Sydney living.

Cheers!

On the move again

We've never been the type to live in one place for too long. Secretly this frustrates me no-end. I'd like nothing more than to stay in one location and make a beautiful home, plant a colourful garden, and adopt a dog. As it is, we've lived in three different cities in the past five years: Sydney, Auckland, Canberra, and now, Sydney again.

I know, I've just finished praising the benefits of Canberra living, and now I'm back in the very city I  was dissing a few months back. But, needs must. Alex has been offered a fantastic new job opportunity that was, as they say, too good to turn down.

And so we find ourselves becoming Sydney-siders once more. Back in the rat-race. In truth, I'm not over the moon about being back in the big smoke, but, between you and me, I've been promised adequate compensation.

There are a few obvious benefits to being back though. I once again have the Sydney flower markets at my disposal. In our new neighbourhood is the beautiful Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden. And I'm hopeful that one day soon I'll be able to secure a fun, inspiring and challenging new role in the floristry industry. I am hungry to learn. Hungry to grow my skills and responsibility level. Hungry to make floral friends. I am particularly eager to get much more hands-on wedding experience.

Thanks to all those who made our (short) time in Canberra a wonderful one.

Love beautiful things?

Me too.

So, I will share with you some pretty// gorgeous// beautiful// stunning// exquisite things.

The Tenth Meadow is the kind of life I dream of living.

Ginnyau has a near perfect aesthetic happening. Her images are blissful. If I could style images half as well as her... oh my!

And whilst we are admiring aesthetics, we must stop by Pearl & Godiva.

Here is Snippet & Ink paying homage to The Mrs Box. And rightly so.

How about the stunning website design at Flannel Flowers?

And here is photographic proof that roses are simply exquisite, no matter what stage of their life they are at.

Pause, peonies

Stop what you're doing. It's November. Which means,

Peonies! of course.

If you're an admirer of the head-turning peony,
then you've got a little over four more weeks to enjoy the layers and layers
and layers of peony petals.
It's a short season.

Enjoy 'em while you can!
These ones are hanging out on my bedside table. And they smell unreal.

Sláinte

Parfait? Fondue?

Terrariums are very much in vogue at the moment.
Why not? They are pretty darn cool.

It is easy to DIY a terrarium if you have a little know-how and the right 'ingredients'. My favourite terrarium plant is the ever versatile succulent. Let's face it, it is incredibly hard to kill a succulent, making it perfect terrarium material.

In my cocktail tumbler terrarium I put a bed of moss (ask your local florist) and three succulents. Easy as!

Succulents don't need much water at all. But it's a good idea to give your moss a mist every so often to keep it looking lush and green and alive. Add any whimsical touches you like.  Toadstools, plastic soldiers,  seas shells, acorns. Inspiration is endless. Raid the toy box.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something...

Every florists knows that blue is a loose concept. A vague concept. Blurred. We push the boundaries on what is considered to be blue. That is because there just aren't that many truly blue flowers out there. And we might not say it, but a lot of florists avoid dyed flowers like the plague. Sorry. But truth. We will of course create wonderful wedding arrangements with dyed orchids and the like, if that is what your heart desires. After all, they're your flowers.

Flowers to use for a blue palette:

The flowers that are truly blue, like hydrangea and forget me not, are so special. It is such a wonderful hue to have incorporated into flower arrangements.

I am a big fan of blue.

Other things I am a fan of:

The Mrs Box has me swooning like a loony this week.

I can't get enough of gold leaf crowns.
