Birthday eve

I have been spending my Friday putting last touches to Alex's birthday celebration tomorrow. We're low-key in this house. So some presents, some flowers, and a birthday tart is celebration enough.

No birthday in November can be celebrated without the inclusion of peonies. Embrace their short season. Even if the recipient is a man. Or just buy them for your home, and pretend that they are part of your gift...

Originally I had planned to bake THIS cake for tomorrow. But, truth is, I am not the best cake maker, and I am not well acquainted with my oven. Baking adventures, whilst enthusiastically pursued in the beginning, leave me frustrated more often than not. Plus, that is simply too much cake for two people. Right? Maybe, maybe not.

So I embraced cherry season and made a cherry tart/pie instead.

A little wonky, and little higgledy-piggledy, but made with love.

Happy, happy birthday.

Pause, peonies

Stop what you're doing. It's November. Which means,

Peonies! of course.

If you're an admirer of the head-turning peony,
then you've got a little over four more weeks to enjoy the layers and layers
and layers of peony petals.
It's a short season.

Enjoy 'em while you can!
These ones are hanging out on my bedside table. And they smell unreal.

Vases

As soon as my floral career had begun it was very clear I lacked a necessary tool: a large stash of vases. I was attending two classes per week and coming home with fresh flowers after each class. I very quickly exhausted my modest vase collection.

And so countless blooms and leaves were stripped, snipped and plonked into various drinking glasses each week. My problem was now two-fold. Too few vases and too few tumblers for drinking from.

This is the first new vase I bought to address my vase deficit. Whilst not a large vase, it is dramatic to say the least.

Needless to say, vase numbers have increased in this household recently.
