Jane Packer

Some of the most exciting and innovative floristry work happens in the Northern Hemisphere. In Europe you are able to complete a masters degree in floristry. Hotel chains in New York and London and Paris have huge budgets for flower installations. London is home to the globally famous Chelsea Flower Show. Amsterdam boasts the worlds largest flower market. Sometimes it feels like we're missing out on so much 'down under'. The cost of flowers is higher here, the wages are higher here, the budgets just aren't as generous here. It's no surprise then that some of the top florists reside in the US and UK. One of the icons of floristry that I so admire is Jane Packer. Sadly, Jane died in 2011, but she has left an impressive legacy. The Jane Packer brand is inimitable. If there is a Queen of floristry, she must be Jane Packer.

I often spend quiet afternoons with a cup of tea and my Jane Packer Flower Course open in my lap. This beautiful coffee table book was a good investment.

Closer to home there are still wonderful florists doing remarkable things. Here are the six best in my city--Canberra--as voted by Canberrans.
